About this collection: A collection of documents relevant to understanding the history of Shimer College, the Great Books college of Chicago, from its founding in 1853 in Mount Carroll, Illinois to the present day. Unless otherwise noted, these documents have been collected and digitized by the Shimer Alumni (Unauthorised) Historical Society.

When complete, this collection will include a full set of official school periodicals that are now in the public domain, from the Seminary Bell in 1859 to the Shimer College Record of a century later, as well as a wide range of student publications, Shimerian ephemera, and other Shimer-related documents.

About Shimer College: Shimer College is a very small liberal arts college, enrolling about 150 students and currently located in Chicago, Illinois. Historically affiliated with the University of Chicago, Shimer has continued to follow the Great Books curriculum developed by iconoclastic U of C president Robert Maynard Hutchins. It offers an early entrance program for bright high school students, a weekend college program for working adults, a BA to JD program for students seeking a legal career, and a biennial Oxford study abroad program. Internal governance is handled by the school's unique governing body, the Shimer College Assembly. Learn more: Official website, Shimer College video.
